Tyson To Resume Processing At Pork Plant After Fire

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Tyson Foods Inc planned to process stored pork on Saturday at its plant in Logansport, Indiana, after a fire there on Friday, but hog slaughtering remained suspended, a spokesman said.

"We intend to do some processing today and Monday," Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson said.

"When slaughter operations will resume, we don't know yet. We are hopeful it will be some time next week, but we don't know specifically when at this point," he said.

The fire caused no injuries but forced the temporary closure of the plant, pressuring hog futures Friday on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Traders said even a temporary loss of the plant, which can process about 15,000 hogs a day, could reduce demand for hogs.

Mickelson said the fire at Logansport, located about 50 miles north of Indianapolis, involved part of the plant's slaughter area and roof. The plant employs more than 1,900 workers.

"Our people have been doing an assessment of the extent of damage and trying to determine what measures need to be taken in order to get the plant back up in operation."

"We will be working through this weekend and into the early part of next week to get things back in order so we can resume slaughter production," Mickelson said.
